Devin, the first Fully Autonomous Software Engineering AI

Welcome to a new post on Aleson ITC’s blog. In today’s article, we will talk about Devin, the first AI software engineer that is fully autonomous and it promises to do things like creating applications from scratch to their deployment.

Who created Devin?

Cognition Labs, the startup founded at the beginning of 2024, has quickly positioned itself as an innovative force in the field of artificial intelligence with its flagship project, Devin.

The Cognition Labs Team

Leading Cognition Labs is a compact yet expert team of 10 people, headed by Scott Wu, the visionary CEO and co-founder. Alongside him, Walden Yan and Steven Hao contribute their experience and leadership as the head of product and chief technology officer, respectively. This team operates without a fixed headquarters, adopting a modern and flexible approach by working remotely from New York and Silicon Valley.

A Legacy of Success in Programming

The team has accumulated 10 gold medals in the International Olympiad in Informatics, showcasing their technical prowess and creativity from an early age.

The Astonishing Results of Devin

Devin represents a revolution in how we conceive artificial intelligence and its application in software engineering. Its primary function is to solve real engineering tasks without assistance. In the SWE-Bench tests, which involve real problems found in open source projects on GitHub, Devin managed to solve 13.86% of the problems autonomously, a significant improvement compared to previous models that managed to solve less than 5% of these problems.

“We have equipped Devin with common development tools, including the shell, code editor, and browser within an isolated computing environment: everything a human would need to perform their work,” Commented the CEO of Cognition Labs.

Devin’s achievements were not limited to GitHub tests; its effectiveness was proven in the real market, where it managed to carry out actual jobs posted on the Upwork platform, demonstrating that it is capable of integrating into existing projects, collaborating with project users, reporting progress in real-time, participating in design decisions, and learning new languages.
